Tutoring is individual learning that helps students improve in certain academic areas, it can build their confidence and self-esteem.
Tutoring can be used for a variety of situations:
• Giving support in topics where students are struggling to understand;
• Help with homework;
• Practise common techniques such as times tables, number bonds and spellings;
• Cover upcoming topics so the student has confidence when facing new concepts;
• Further a students’ learning to help reach their maximum potential.
Very often students find it difficult to ask for help in a class situation. 1-2-1 settings can give the student the confidence to ask for support.
Funnily enough (despite having spent 8 happy years teaching in my favourite year group Year 6) I am not a fan of SATs. I felt I had a quality in supporting and coaching my pupils through this time. I was a firm believer in the phrase ‘as long as you can say you have done your best, that’s all that matters’. That is still my focus now, encouraging them to have confidence to try to the best of their own ability.
